5th Greek BookCrossing Convention
How I spent my holidays
Thursday, 07 January 2010 11:43
Dear Diary,
The new year is here, now I don’t have to tell everyone “in May 2010” anymore, I’ll just say “in May”, perfect! Happy new year and a good convention to us!

I sent out greeting cards to several bookcrossers all over Greece (and some abroad), in order to personally wish them happy holidays and I think they liked them. I hope no one was disappointed. It was fun to write the cards in our Bazaar OBCZ, during a nice afternoon before Christmas.

I saw that bookcrossers and many others said cool things about the site and that made me happy, because both my developer and I worked really hard and it is so good to see that it was all worth it. Unfortunately, many categories are still currently under construction, but bit  by bit everything will be completed. I also have a little game visitors can play, in the Multimedia menu!

Plus 4 different wallpapers, 3 label collections, stickers and various other things were added to that menu. More will follow, but have a look and feel free to download whatever you like!

I also uploaded a piece about our mascot, where anyone can find information concerning previous conventions’ mascots, how this year’s mascot was created, and one can also download it and use it wherever s/he wants (and I hope that many will take it and write articles and blog posts for the convention!).

However there is something I have not spoken about yet. It is the convention’s name. Everyone sees the “Demek” stamp everyone, but no one has even asked me, that’s strange! So, that is the official name of the 5th convention. Until now we have had Symposium, Mazoksi, Antamoma. Now we move on to Demek.

Why Demek? Well, it's since we always say that the word “convention” describing what we do may not be very appropriate, and it sure does not reflect exactly what we get up to and how we spend the convention days. So our convention is a bit Demek, that is, make-believe, “as if”, by imagination, you get the idea. The word comes from the Turkish language and it is very common in Thessaloniki. See now how everything fits? A demek convention is much closer to the cool Greek Bookcrossing conventions and of course closer to Thessaloniki. So I decided that this should be its name!

I have also started booking various happenings for the convention, but they can’t be announced yet. January will be a month of fervent preparations, oh dear, so tiring! I also have received the first registrations but I’m waiting for many more. I hope people will not forget the Kindle draw, which will include everyone who registers and pays until February 16.

I’ll write again soon, bye for now,
Salonica2010

Happy Holidays!

Dear Diary,
I may not have found the time to write to you about all the news since last time, yet, but I just had to write a quick Merry Christmas, right? Wishes for lovely holidays, and some rest for me because I'm beat and I want to return to work refreshed. I like the holidays, even though I get a bit melancholic at times.

So, Merry Christmas and a Happy 2010 for us! I hope it will bring a perfect convention! I've got to go see if the turkey has been roasted by now. Don't worry, I'll be Greek enough, I'll drink some tsipouro first!

Kisses,
Salonica2010

Welcome!

Dear Diary,

I've decided to write to you, because I want to tell someone about what's troubling me concerning the Bookcrossing Convention. But I'll start at the beginning, so you'll know what I'm talking about.

Last April, a few days past Easter, I was at the Larisa Convention. I was having a good time, relaxing and all, I loved the company too, so I got my Big Idea: I should be the one to organise the next one!

You know me better than anyone, dear diary. Once I get something in my head, I can't get it out! So, I decided, since there was noone else expressing an interest, to announce my intention as quickly as possible. I did my best, I put my whole enthusiasm forward and all my goodwill and I announced the 2010 Convention!

Then, of course, I did my Greek nature credit. I did nothing! I was hanging around, drinking frappes, strolling around Thermaikos, I went on summer holidays, the weather did not do any favours by staying warm till so late, but now I'm all ready and set to throw myself in organising. I, meanwhile, have made some decisions, let me share them with you.

Firstly, I decided to create a site. I thought it's high time there was a place where Greek Bookcrossing could organize its actions, store its members' labels, keep a list of active bookrings and, anyway, be there for anything one could come up with. So, the site will start off as something exclusively convention-related, but then will remain open and expand into what I've mentioned earlier. In fact, I'll ask all bookcrossers who come at the convention, to give me suggestions on what this new site should have. Cool, huh?

Secondly, the convention is going to last 4 days, like the one in Chania. We never have enough time, we all want more and even just one extra day is important. So, take note of the dates: Friday the 21st to Monday the 24th of May. It was a bit of an one-way decision, because May 1st is on a Saturday, Easter is too early, so you can understand. I made the announcement a while ago. Tough day, had some rejections. But you can't satisfy everyone, I knew that already. I wish all bookcrossers could be there. Registering, I forgot to tell you, is already open through the site!

What about the mascot? What do you think? The idea and first draft are karry's, and mafaldaq helped in its digitalizing. I myself love it and immediately singled it out from all the rest of the suggestions - which were also fantastic, thanks a million times!

I've already started thinking on writers attending, on what the schedule'll be like, what I could do different this time, but I'll keep mum until I have a definite plan.

I've received some suggestions regarding the convention already. That has been tremendously useful and it proves that several bookcrossers think on the conventions 12 months a year and not only during its taking place. Even if, just saying, I use none of these ideas, I love the ones behind the inspirations. If someone else has a suggestion, I know they'll send them at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or with a PM at my profile so I can read them.

So, that's all for now, dearest diary. Ah! I forgot to mention how much fun it is that everyone tries to guess my sex. I've been crying with laughter at the guesses hanging on one of my phrases or articles! I imagine this will keep them busy a long time...

Kisses, see you soon,
Salonica2010.
