5th Greek BookCrossing Convention - BookCrossers.gr
Accommodation

So, here you can find my suggestions for staying in Thessaloniki (whereas during the convention or generally)! I tried to include something for all budgets, since I'm such a helpful individual.

ATTENTION! In every case, be sure to make your reservation as soon as possible! As I was informed, at the end of May Thessaloniki hosts many conventions, exhibitions in the International Fair take place, and several early summer tourists arrive! That means the prices mentioned below may start to go up a bit!

ATTENTION No2!! If you come across any problem with the prices (eg. because the clerk doesn't know my deal with the hotel owner) do NOT make a reservation. Contact me through the site, so I can fix it, and call back again. Make sure to ALWAYS ask the price!

Here we go! Oh! All written distances were measured with a relaxed walk on foot, since I'm an ecologist, too. Wherever "the centre" is mentioned, I mean Aristotle Square, all right??

"Pella" Hotel

The website where you can find photos and more information is here. The hotel is located in the heart of the city (63, Ionos Dragoumi st.), 5' from Aristotelous Square and a little above Egnatia, close to Filippou st. It can offer guests the best service for its category (2 stars) - personal bathroom, tv, air-conditioning in every room, excellent breakfast in a special room, as well as a room for recreation purposes on the ground floor - Wi-Fi network included.

"Egnatia Palace" Hotel

Additional photos and information can be found on the homepage here. The hotel is at 61, Egnatia str, just half a minute from the centre. I've never been there, but it's a four-star hotel, so you can expect brilliant service and luxury.

The prices for the convention members are:egnatiapalace

single:         84 euros

twin/double: 97 euros

three beds: 120 euros

Breakfast and tax are included in the prices.

What is requested of you, if you choose this hotel for your stay, is do NOT make the reservation online, but via telephone, at +30  2310 222900, since the rooms go for other prices on the net. Call them up, mention you are for "the bookcrossing convention" and you'll get the prices listed above. A small down payment (eg. the price of one night's stay) will also be requested, either using a credit card or by depositing the amount at a bank account you'll be given.

"Egnatia Hotel"

Additional photos and information can be found on the homepage here. The hotel is at 16, Antigonidon str, 1 minute up from Egnatia str, 15 minutes from the centre. It is a three-star hotel, very clean and quiet, with a brilliant bar (here, I've been). The staff are extremely polite.

The prices for the convention members are:egnatiahotel

single:         58 euros

twin/double: 70 euros

three beds:  88 euros

four beds:  105 euros

Breakfast and tax are included in the prices.

"Aegeon Hotel"

Additional photos and information can be found on the homepage here. The hotel is at 19, Egnatia str, 15 minutes from the centre. It is a three-star hotel and I've stayed there many times, so I've extra information for you: it is very clean, moderately quiet, as it is on Egnatia str (large avenue with lots of traffic) and its clientele tends to be younger. However, I've never had a problem with falling soundly asleep. The rooms have TV, air-condition, are fairly small, but really adequate, and the bathrooms are quite - and sometimes very - large, with a hairdrier. The client gets slippers, shampoo, shower gel, plastic cap, sewing kit and lots of towels. The staff are extremely polite and helpful. It has recently been renovated. It is part of the same hotel group as the two hotels mentioned above.

The prices for the convention members are:aegeonhotel

single:         47 euros

twin/double: 58 euros

three beds:  73 euros

Breakfast and tax are included in the prices.

"Orestias-Kastorias" Hotel

Additional photos and information can be found on the homepage here. Bear in mind, however, that the hotel is currently undergoing renovations, so the site does not really comply with what you'll find during the convention. It is on the corner of Olympou-Agnostou Stratioti 14, 5 minutes up from Egnatia, in the centre. It has three storeys, no elevator. I viewed it during the renovations, so all I can say is: the new rooms are fairly large, with TV, air-condition and wi-fi. The bathrooms are small. There is no breakfast-room or bar. Coffee/tea are served at all times. Also, if I can add, the staff are very polite and warm people.

RentRooms

Additional photos and information can be found on the homepage here. It is directly across from the old Philosophy School building of the Aristotle University, at 9, Melenikou str. 20 minutes (3 bus-stops) from the centre. It opened 2 months ago, is very new and squeaky clean, well arranged and planned with care. It has a cafe/breakfast/TV-room/library which, when the weather allows, spills out in the courtyard overlooking the Rotunda. Breakfast is made by Aris, the owner, ex-judoka and very cool person. The kitchen is open to all. The large rooms (eg. 4-beds) have metal bunker-beds. Every room has its own bathroom. Smoking is only allowed in the cafe.

CouchSurfing

And now, my additional proposition for you! Listen up!

I have an alternative, cheap and very interesting suggestion! How would you feel if you were to stay at a friend's house during the convention? Ideal? If such a friend with available space can not be found in Thessaloniki, how about making one friend right now? In other words, how would you like joining another equally large and active community? I'm talking about CouchSurfers!

couchsurfing

The Thessaloniki community, though not really organised when meetings and happenings take place, is very active in providing hospitality and those who have tried it are left with the best of impressions. Many members from Thessaloniki (mmjrules, mafaldaQ, quino-salonica, efou, zlatkoGR, lydoula, spekuloos, japanorange) have already provided and accepted hospitality many times, with great success!

Becoming a member is an easy and simple process. You register, build your profile carefully, with many details, and pick what type of a couchsurfer you'll be. If providing hospitality for a stranger seems too much, you can always offer information to visitors to your hometown, or company for a cup of coffee, a drink, a sightseeing tour or whatever. And, naturally, when you travel yourself, you get to ask for similar assistance.

But is it safe to receive hospitality in a stranger's house? It is. The "stranger" you pick has decided to be a couchsurfer and that is more of a way of life than a choice of stay. They want to be able to both provide and receive hospitality. After each stay, every couchsurfer gives references (impressions) to the other's "couch". References is one of the most important issues for all couchsurfers. The better impression they are given, the better things they write to recommend their host/visitor to others. And it's all a matter of honour. So, if the references are good and from many people, you have nothing to fear. You'll surely have a grand time, make lots of friends and your stay in Thessaloniki will be more alternative and ecologically correct. And of course, the cheapest!

If you're thinking "How cool" right now, log on the site, join, mark any friends you know and search for an available couch in Thessaloniki for the days of the convention duration. Once you have some available candidates, read their profiles very carefully and for anything you don't know, just ask me. I'll have something to suggest and I'll find a way to help you. Since you're going to be a new member, I'll give you the proper references for the older and experienced members. Just make sure to put down "Hospitality for the 5th Greek BookCrossing Convention" as the subject in your request form!
